Synopsis:

Charlotte and Liselotte were ten years old when they first discovered the video camera. What they didn't know then, was that the camera would still live close to them 17 years later. Their expressions in front of the camera began like an innocent game but soon became a growing need. Charlotte has difficulties to let go of the past and the camera she always wants to have around. But when Liselotte and herself unexpectedly become pregnant everything hits a turning point. Liselotte who's living in England meets prejudiced resistance from her parents while Charlotte starts to realise the seriousness of having to deal with her past and grow up. The two childhood friends takes us on an emotional journey of memories and confrontations with their parents where they try to meet with different values between the two generations.

Original title:

Burmese Dreaming

Dialog language:

english

Synopsis:

BURMESE DREAMING A Documentary Poem A young woman has a nightmare about the killing of her father by soldiers in a mountain village in Burma. She wakes up. She is in a refugee camp on the Thailand-Burma border. This is where she has lived for 6 years but still her mind is not here. Instead, it drifts between the realities of refugee life and dreams and day-dreams about Burma and a life she used to live. She is with her childhood buffalo friend, Zu Zu Ma, she has imaginary conversations with her fishermen friends, and she dreams of the family she used to have. Burmese Dreaming combines a lyrical musical score with a non-fiction narrative scripted by refugees from Umphiem Mai refugee camp and is based on the story a young woman who was imprisoned by the Burmese military at age 5. Footage for Burmese Dreaming has been filmed throughout Burma as well as in the refugee camps on the Thailand-Burma border. This is the first feature documentary of author, director and international award winning photojournalist Timothy Syrota.

Nothing About Us Without Us

Dialog language:

english,burmese

Subtitles:

Synopsis:

Is this the most controversial film made about refugees on the Thailand-Burma border? This is a time of upheaval and anxiety for the refugees of the Thai-Burma border and they are not being kept adequately in the picture. UNHCR are furious but their fury probably stems from the fact that refugee voices have been documented and found their way onto the international stage - screenings in New York, Washington, Geneva, Japan, Spain, France, the Foreign Correspondents' Club Thailand, and a private screening to 20 ambassadors and embassy staff at the Czech Embassy Bangkok. UNHCR has long been critized internally on the Thai-Burma border and finally some of those chickens came to roost. The Karen refugee groups unanimously laud the film for giving them a voice and perhaps the best review is that the Karen Women's Organization had t-shirts made up stating 'Nothing About Us Without Us' to reinforce the themes of the film.
